Denial
It’s just a stage, they say, but it doesn’t ring true.
She knows the truth. It’s basic. Elemental. Like water or fire.
But their ignorance is resolute, entrenched in their need for normalcy.

This is my submission for this weekend’s Trifextra challenge in which we had to use the words ring, water, and stage and then add 30 of our own words.

This is so good Suzanne! The need for normalcy is a powerful drug. Once again, you’ve wowed me with your word wizardry!
Valeriev? What’s up with me today!! 😉
Not enough caffeine? Or too much? 😉
Aw, thanks Valerie! There’s nothing worse than being told to be “normal” when you just aren’t.
I hate when peeps try to downplay deeper feelings. Great use of the words.
Me too. Thanks Draug!
Normalcy is way over-rated!!! Great word choices!
Absolutely! 🙂 Thanks Gina!
There certainly is safety in ignorance, isn’t there? Great use of the words in the prompt!
Yes, indeed. Thanks Tina! 🙂
How true. I like the elemental inference.
Thank you! 🙂
Very interesting story. It made me want to read more. Great job.
Thanks Lumdog!
Although to be honest, there’s no such thing as normal, if we were all normal, we’d be the Children of the Corn – blond, blued eyed and crazy.
Ha! Yes, I think you’re right about that. Thanks for commenting! 🙂
Love this!
Thank you! 🙂
Having a special needs child, we heard “it’s just a stage,” many times. Pfft!
Pfft, indeed! 🙂 Thanks for commenting Tara!
I love this. I always found the ‘it’s just a stage’ comment demeaning. (I heard that many times throughout my life…good thing the blue eye shadow really was just a stage :))
Thanks Janna! Yeah, I agree with you – about the comment being demeaning, but also about the blue eyeshadow! 😉
So true Suzanne … As always, loved your piece 🙂
Thank you so much! 🙂
“entrenched in their need for normalcy” – great line.
Thank you Letizia!
Well said! A good thing for all of us to remember.
Absolutely! Thanks Deb!
“It’s basic. Elemental. Like water or fire” <- Very nice – that frustration of others not grasping the simplicity of something. I think what you've written here will "ring true" for many people (unfortunately).
Thanks for your great comment! Hopefully finding like-minded people makes things easier – it certainly does for me. 🙂
we go through so many stages in our lives . . . and at EVERY one of them, someone says “It’s just a stage they’re going through.” Funny how that never seems to help. Good 33, Suzanne
So very true Barbara! Thanks for commenting! 🙂
The labeling of what you know to be you as ‘just a stage’ can be so painful and damaging!
Absolutely. Thanks for commenting Gabriella!
