Metamorphosis
The explosion shattered the night; thick smoke dotted out the stars. Scarlet flames licked a path into the now pitch-black sky. And I stood, match in hand, watching the fire devour my past.

This is my submission for this weekend’s Trifextra challenge in which we had to write a 33-word piece that included some colour.
It’s a community vote this week, so be sure to check out the other submissions and come back Sunday evening to vote for your three favourites.

Just another entry where I’m begging for more. Great post!
Thank you so much! 🙂
I particularly like the description of smoke and stars. This is complete. Could it be more, yeah, but it stands well on its own. Nice.
Thanks LaTonya! I’m glad you liked it. 🙂
Cleansing fire. I like reading this as a metaphor for an oft desire to start all over, wipe out what already was and have a clean slate.
Thanks for your comment Deb! Yes, that’s what I was going for. 🙂
First one I’ve read and it sets the bar high. Need to get my thinking cap on!
Aw, thanks Paul! I’m glad you enjoyed it. 🙂
The contrast between the pitch black night and the licking flame is very powerful. I also like the phrase ‘thick smoke dotted out the stars’. A great piece Suzanne!
Thanks so much Gabriella! 🙂
The purge of all purges. The contrast of the description of the fire to the flatness of her emotions was awesome.
Nothing cleanses quite like fire. Thanks so much for your comment Jennifer! 🙂
I hope her future involves less flames. Nice post.
Thanks Bryan! 🙂
I like the ominous feel. Of course, I want to know more about what (or whom?) she’s destroyed, but it’s enough to see the route she’s chosen. Sadly, I’m fairly certain her past will be with her every moment, regardless.
So true Janna – it’s hard to escape the things that form us. Thanks for commenting! 🙂
This gave me chills. Great piece.
Thank you Kitty! 🙂
Suzanne, you always bring subtlety and strong writing to each of your pieces. The idea of fire devouring is packed with imagery. Well done :))
Thanks so much Jo-Anne! I’m glad you liked it. 🙂
Dark and mysterious. Nicely written!
Thank you! 🙂
I agree with LaTonya that this is complete. It’s stark and compelling, and there’s a universality in that desire to take a match to the past and start over.
Thanks so much for your comment! 🙂
Yes, devouring the past can be a temptation, indeed! However, without my past, I wouldn’t be who I am now. Good or bad, I’m not sure! 🙂
So true. Though sometimes a little metaphorical destruction can be good. 😉 Thanks for commenting Freya! 🙂
Powerful Suzanne great imagery.
Thank you!
So much unsaid with that match in hand. Great work.
Thanks Draug! 🙂
Intense. Sometimes it is good to let fire scrub everything clean.
Yes indeed. Thanks for commenting Tina! 🙂
Wonderfully complete. Loved it.
Thank you! 🙂
A lot of raised questions here. It leaves the reader desiring more, and that’s a sign of great writing.

Aw, thanks! 🙂
A poignant piece, as usual you can make so much out of so few words.
Thanks so much Lena! I’m glad you enjoyed it. 🙂
Oooh. Match in hand. Now this is a story of a different color! 😀
😀 Thanks Linda!

Thanks Renada! 🙂
This is great.
Thank you Kelly! 🙂
This would be a wonderful start for a longer piece. Powerful imagery.
Thanks Tara! 🙂
Suzanne, I was completely consumed by this piece! Another stunning piece of writing!
Aw, thanks Valerie! 🙂
A great piece of writing Suzanne. As others have said, it leaves you wanting to know more.
Thank you Mike! I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Excellent. I can see that fire as it destroys the old and creates the new.
Thanks! 🙂
To hold a match to the burning of your past was masterful! Another of my fav’s!
Aw, thanks Shawn! I’m glad you liked it.
I like this. It’s so final, yet evokes fresh beginning. And, of course, I want to know what drove her to this point and what her next step is. I’m nosy like that. 🙂
😀 Thanks Ivy! I’ll have to think about what drove her there…
Love the image of you standing there. Loved it. And would love to know what’s next?
Thanks Mary Beth! Not sure what’s next, but here’s hoping it doesn’t end in flames… 😉
there are times, are there not, when we wish we could burn our bridges? Great piece Suzanne
Absolutely. Thank you Barbara!
I think we all want the scarlet flames to devour some parts of our past. Beautiful.
Thanks so much Lucy! 🙂
Fire = Metamorphosis. Great imagery.
Thank you!
