Trifextra: Metamorphosis

Metamorphosis

The explosion shattered the night; thick smoke dotted out the stars. Scarlet flames licked a path into the now pitch-black sky. And I stood, match in hand, watching the fire devour my past.

This is my submission for this weekend’s Trifextra challenge in which we had to write a 33-word piece that included some colour.

It’s a community vote this week, so be sure to check out the other submissions and come back Sunday evening to vote for your three favourites.

  1. Cleansing fire. I like reading this as a metaphor for an oft desire to start all over, wipe out what already was and have a clean slate.

  2. The contrast between the pitch black night and the licking flame is very powerful. I also like the phrase ‘thick smoke dotted out the stars’. A great piece Suzanne!

  3. I like the ominous feel. Of course, I want to know more about what (or whom?) she’s destroyed, but it’s enough to see the route she’s chosen. Sadly, I’m fairly certain her past will be with her every moment, regardless.

  4. I agree with LaTonya that this is complete. It’s stark and compelling, and there’s a universality in that desire to take a match to the past and start over.

  5. A lot of raised questions here. It leaves the reader desiring more, and that’s a sign of great writing.

Thank you for linking up! Please remember to return for the voting!
