It’s Not You
She left me on the edge of a barren land.
Emptiness stretched out as far as I could see.
Vultures circle as I follow the sun home.
I said I needed space, but that wasn’t what I meant.

This is my submission for this week’s Trifecta writing challenge, in which we had to write 33 of our own words to precede the five they provided, which were “that wasn’t what I meant.”

It’s funny, “I said I needed space, but that wasn’t what I meant.”
Thanks Ranu! I’m glad you saw the humour in this. 🙂
That’s a lot of space…haha. Well done.
It sure is! As the saying goes, be careful what you wish for. 😉
Very true!!
In relationships I also allow a little space, just so that they never really need anymore.
I loved the flow and ebb of this, felt the “wish I hadn’t said that” piece of my younger self. It was that good.
Aw, thank you so much, Kir! Space is so important in any relationship, but sometimes it takes time (and some self-confidence) to be able to see that. 🙂
Good one, Suzanne.. vultures circle.. nice.
Thanks Steph! 🙂
Ha, I’m not sure if you meant it to be but I actually found that funny. It was a cool juxtaposition though, because the words were poetically melancholy.
Oh, I definitely meant for it to be funny! So I’m really glad you saw the humour in it – as well as the contrast with the language. Thanks so much for commenting! 🙂
I also love how you combined humor with sadness.
Thanks Christi! 🙂
You said you wanted space, so she dropped you off where there was plenty of that. That’s being considerate even if she is upset.. I like the humour in this post.
Thanks so much for your comment, Michelle! I’m really glad you enjoyed it. 🙂
Prophetic, metaphoric and a bit funny too. Hard to get all three in there but you seemed to nail it. Thanks for sharing!
Aw, thanks! That’s just where my head went with your prompt. Glad you enjoyed it! 🙂
The space you describe is not a happy one. Love the structure and mood of this – really affecting.
Thank you so much, Sarah Ann! No, not a happy space at all. 🙂
Ooooohhhhhh. No messing with that one! I’m not so sure home is the best idea!! Smooth and funny, Suzanne!
Thanks Kymm! True, home might not be such a smart plan at the moment. 🙂
This is funny! I think this falls under, “be careful what you wish for” 🙂
Absolutely! And thank you – I’m glad you enjoyed it! 🙂
This is a beautiful picture – I love the starkness of it, as well as the humor.
Aw, thank you so much Christine! 🙂
Well written and funny. I think if someone did that to me, I’d suspect that they were more than a little upset about something I did. Hope the person gets home OK.
Thank you so much for your comment! I think your assessment is bang on. 🙂
