Lurking
There are monsters in the dark, she said. Tucked in closets and hiding under beds.
There are hundreds of different ones, she said. Some have claws, others have teeth.
The one behind you has fangs, she said. And spins webs of glass.

Ooh, that one just give me the chills!
Excellent! 😉
It gave me the shivers. (and we were watching Charlotte’s web last night, so I had spiders on my mind)
We never really know what form our monsters are going to take do we? So well written.
Thanks Kir! It’s amazing all the shapes that monsters come in.
I can’t think about Charlotte’s Web without getting a little teary. 🙂
my husband, who incidentally hates spiders, was very teary about Charlotte. He was still talking about it the next day. (Yes, he’s seen the movie many times. It just touches him 🙂 )
Love this, Suzanne!
Thank you! 🙂
One behind you has fangs and spins web of glass, this one is scary,Suzanne.
Thanks Ranu! 🙂
Awesome! This one gives me chills.
Excellent! I mean, sorry. 😉
Made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
Glad to hear it! 🙂
Love the almost throw away-ness of the repeated ‘she said’. It only helps to build the fear of the things lurking. Love it.
Thanks Sarah Ann! Yeah, I wanted to use the repetition to build tension, so I’m glad it worked. 🙂
Very effective use of words.
Thank you so much! 🙂
How cool! I love the spinning webs of glass. SO good!
Aw, thanks! I’m really glad you liked it. 🙂
freaking CREEPTASTIC!!!
😀
Thank you!
That’s really spooky. Nice use of the picture. Well done.
Thanks Joe! 🙂
Love the use of repetition here. Precious words “spent” on it, but it creates a really nice reinforcement effect as you reval more. Spooky too. Love it!
Thanks for the great comment! 🙂
Fantastic!
Thank you! 🙂
As usual, Suzanne: perfection ! Your writing is a pleasure to the senses. :))
Aw, thank you so much, Jo-Anne! 🙂
Love it! Good thing it’s no where near bedtime.
Fortunately, I have three dogs that would happily eat a spider, no matter how big it happens to be. 😉
Chills all the way. Awesome take.
Thank you so much! 🙂
This sort of stuff is why my house is booby trapped. Just in case. This gave me shivers!
😀
I hear you. My house is doggy trapped, but that doesn’t stop me from checking all the locks repeatedly. 😉
Webs of glass sound dangerous!
I’m sure they are – and the giant spiders who spin them aren’t a cakewalk either. 😉
How scary it is…Lurking!!!
Thank you! 🙂
I can hear the sound that webs of glass would make–sets my teeth on edge!
No kidding. Like creepy nails on a chalkboard. 🙂
Real or imagined, don’t know which is creepier. *shivers*
I think they’re both pretty terrifying, in their own special ways. 🙂
Shudder. Spiders give me the willies a little bit but I’ve slowly gotten used to them. I love this whole thing though, so many different monsters.
Thanks Jen! I make myself be tolerant of spiders (well, the little ones anyway) because I know they eat things like mosquitoes. But they still make me jump (even the little ones) when I happen on one unexpectedly. 🙂
Gorgeously rendered, Suzanne…scary but gorgeous.
Aw, thanks so much, Meg! 🙂
I couldn’t help reciting this in a Gollum-ish voice in my mind. So creepy.
😀
Yeah, I imagine the Gollum voice would make it extra creepy.
ooh. i shuddered at the end of the post.
sorta reminds me of Monsters Inc. but less cute, and scarier. =)
Thank you! That’s kind of what I was going for. 🙂
Haunting. I hope it wasn’t spoken to a child. 🙂
No, but it was spoken by a child. I’m not sure if that’s any better. 😉
It’s a creepy, graphic fairy-tale- I love it. I pictured a little girl, telling her mom about the monster behind her in a perfectly calm voice, so it doesn’t even register at first that she’d best turn around 😏
That’s exactly how I pictured it, only it was a dad instead of a mom. I’m so glad you enjoyed it! 🙂
